Far Arden by Kevin Cannon

Far Arden
by Kevin Cannon
Top Shelf, 2009

This chunky book set in the islands of the Canadian High Arctic arose from the author’s adaptation of Scott McCloud’s 24 Hour Comics Day challenge. Instead of producing a self-contained 24-page comic over 24 hours, the first four chapters were drawn over four weekly 24-hour sessions, which is great for productivity but not so great for any cartoonist’s mental health.

It begins as a two-fisted Scott Pilgrim-like pastiche of seafaring quests, where sound effects come with exclamation marks and everyone is REALLY INTENSE, but nearly 400 pages later it’s developed into an intricately plotted and thoughtful thriller with a surprisingly sad ending. The entire thing can be read online here.
