Bristle #9

Bristle #9
edited by Brent Willis
BCW Publishing, 2011

Brent Willis has been publishing Bristle for only two years, but that already makes it one of the longest-running and most successful Wellington comics compilations, second only to Pistake (which lasted for 12 issues over three years). It’s cheap, too, with a full-colour cover.

Issue #9 contains a few long-running stories (which unfortunately are incomprehensible without the previous parts) as well as the more satisfying one-pagers, which are samplers from their talented contributors. Robyn E. Kenealy and Dick Whyte’s series of riffs on imagined meetings between various philosophers and cheerfully irreverent actor Roddy McDowall are particularly effective, as is Renee Lyons’ charming The Science Fair.

Bristle is photocopied from a master copy instead of the now usual practice of printing straight from a PDF file, so the artwork in this particular issue favours unshaded linework with few areas of black, except for my obnoxious contribution at the back. I must do more of them. Not many of the cartoonists have included titles or their names on their pages, so the contributions tend to run together. There’s also six pages of Draw’s experimental comics, some of which have been printed upside down, apparently.

Willis has skilfully avoided the pitfalls of previous compilations by keeping things simple and inexpensive, and the result is an inclusive project which affords exposure to many local talents who would otherwise remain unseen. Many of the back issues are available at Graphic in Cuba Mall, although apparently not all of them are on display, so polite enquiries as to their whereabouts are encouraged.

“some of which have been printed upside down, apparently.” I like to call it now Brent’s creative re-interpretation of my comic – a remix 🙂
