Gonzo: A Graphic Biography of Hunter S. Thompson
by Will Bingley & Anthony Hope-Smith
Selfmadehero, 2010

An amusing whip through of the life of the good Doctor which dwells mostly on the iconic stuff from the 1970s and glosses over the last three decades of his life, simplifying them just like a bad TV biography would, and implying they were as woeful as their conclusion, suicide by gunshot.

The sparse text contains a lot of HST quotes and maintains an authentic narrative voice, while the sparser art is just sufficient to tell the story. It’s funny to be reminded how closely Warren Ellis’s Spider Jerusalem is based on HST – with the addition of asymmetrical shades and a bowel disruptor gun you’d have an alternative universe origin story here.
