Action Philosophers!
by Fred Van Lente & Ryan Dunlavey
Evil Twin Comics, 2009

A playful and surprisingly informative addition to an unexpectedly burgeoning graphic novel genre: philosopher biographies. The basic principles of Marxism and a summation of the work of Joseph Campbell are set out deftly, and quite a lot of fun is had along the way – ex-wrestler Plato is presented as a Hulk-like figure who shouts “Plato smash!”, Diogenes is a giant cartoon dog, and John Stuart Mill’s life is presented as a Peanuts strip.

Some of the participants come off worse than others – poor Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s life is a now a sitcom, featuring a fornicating Boswell, and the authors obviously don’t have much sympathy for Ayn Rand… but then again, who does?
