Echoes by Joshua Hale Fialkov & Rahsan Ekedal

by Joshua Hale Fialkov & Rahsan Ekedal
Top Cow Productions, 2011

Extremely unpleasant Harvey Award-bait (inexplicably, it was nominated for three) which starts out promisingly – a man’s father confesses on his deathbed to being a serial killer – but soon devolves into a hoary Fight Club-ripoff with a dumb Twilight Zone ending.

The hero is schizophrenic, and repeatedly finds himself in situations where he’s just a bit late in taking his little pills, which of course instantly leads to garish hallucinations of death and psychosis. This is insulting to both schizophrenia sufferers and the reader’s intelligence. The final insult comes at the end – 36 pages of filler to bulk out the book. Avoid.
