The Job Thing by Carol Tyler

The Job Thing
by Carol Tyler
Fantagraphics, 1993

A blunt collection of anecdotes by Tyler (subtitled ‘Stories About Shitty Jobs”) which has presumably been reprinted because of its current relevance. She seems to have had more than her share of awful jobs, and this slim book (a change from Fantagraphics’s usual luxury volumes) is interesting from a historical perspective, as Reaganism heralds both job casualization and (before her horrified gaze) the rise of the Yuppie.

There’s a bleakness to some of her working relationships which I don’t think you see often in New Zealand – workmates who are nakedly hostile and prejudiced even when you’re working together in a confined space. She gets a lot of this, as well as contempt for her Master of Fine Arts.
