Viking: The Long Cold Fire by Brandon & Klein

Viking: The Long Cold Fire
by Ivan Brandon & Nic Klein
Image Comics, 2010

Not a great story, but there’s some exceptional artwork in this bloodthirsty tale of two Viking brothers in the 9th century. There’s ink, paint, coloured pencil and Benday dots, often on the same page.

The different styles sometimes signify a change in mood, but often seem to be just for the hell of it, with panels splintered like a smashed bar of chocolate. It’s just a shame the script isn’t better… it’s a bit like a single reductive plot thread from Game of Thrones, but without the political sophistication.
